Baseball is Amazing: Top Reasons Why
Apr 15th
We all know baseball is amazing: The crack of bat on the ball, a bang-bang play on the base paths, sitting in the stands with a cold beer on a warm summer night – the list goes on. There are numerous reasons why baseball is amazing. Determining what most people find awesome about baseball can be difficult, as everyone has their own opinion and reasons that appeal to them. While I prefer good pitching to a three-run dinger, some people prefer the opposite. Which is more exciting: A triple or a stolen base? Anyway, here are some universal reasons about that make America’s Pastime amazing:
- Something New to Talk About Every Night – Many sports spectators complain about how slow-moving baseball is. I find that opinion to be more indicative of that person’s general impatience than anything else. Of all sports, baseball has the most games played per season and the most teams playing games. For a baseball fan, the action never ceases.
- Parity – Parity is a word most commonly used by NCAA basketball tournament announcers. However, it is a huge plus in baseball as well. Despite the fact that baseball’s evil empire – the New York Yankees – has a payroll topping $200 million, a team with a quarter of the cash to spend is just as competitive (see the Tampa Bay Rays).
- Player Development – Sure, some people know that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was a seventh round draft pick, but did you know Albert Pujols was a 13th round pick? The player development in baseball provides depth that no other sport can. Each team has several minor league teams and just about every player (besides those drafted after a full college career) cuts their teeth in the minors. Watching a team that learns to contend in the big leagues based on smart drafting and developing players in A, AA and AAA ball is truly the apex of sports fandom. If you have an interest in pro scouting, perhaps consider an online degree in sports management.
- International Appeal – Baseball is also amazing because of all the different countries that play and provide potential Major League talent. Only soccer rivals the ability of baseball to find a 14-year-old Venezuelan kid with a multimillion dollar arm. There is no limit to potential areas of interest for fans of this sport. International scouting is one of those areas.
- Statistical Analysis – Baseball is the perfect game for the number-crunching sports fan. The records for baseball stats are well-kept historical archives, and are readily available for free online. Stats are also a great source of trivia and, of course, fans can get into the personal stories of the all-time greats, as there are many biographies and journalistic articles chronicling the best players.
- Fantasy Baseball – Every sports fan has an inner-manager in them, and fantasy baseball is the perfect avenue to test out your sports management skills. Which, if they are consistently good enough might cause you to consider in enrolling in a sports management program, such as the ones found at www.sportsmanagementcolleges.net. Draft your favorite players or grab the best players and go for first place. Either way, fantasy baseball allows the baseball fan to really emerge themselves in what is happening across the league, not just in your home town.
- Your Home Ballpark – For me, its Safeco Field – home of the Seattle Mariners. For you, it may be the friendly confines of Wrigley Field or even the brand new stadium in Miami. Whatever park your home team plays in, make that park on of your regular hangouts this summer and you will not be disappointed. A ballpark visit during the summer is a family-friendly community event. Do not miss out.
